Vending... but make it OISHII

With over 4 million vending machines in Japan serving all kinds of weird and wonderful products, OISHII (meaning ‘delicious’ or ‘tasty’) are introducing Australians to a new kind of vending experience that features both hot and cold, ready-to-go products.

Alongside the OISHII team, we developed a brand identity that’s both bold and clean with a distinctly Japanese feel featuring a colour palette lead by a striking ‘celtic’ blue and cushioned by a granite grey.

To bring a level of authenticity and visual interest to the vending machines, we wrote, storyboarded and illustrated original manga comic strips, inspired by popular anime shows and characters in pop culture, to appear on both sides of the machine.

Each comic strip features original characters in a light-hearted, comical scenario centred around food and drink.

The machine wraps were designed with a ‘best of both worlds’ approach featuring a minimal, clean and non-intrusive layout for the front to avoid distracting viewers from the purchase interface and product offering.

In contrast, both side panels feature the illustrated comic strips paired with a bolder use of the colour palette, particularly the iconic blue, and branded Japanese characters.

To help promote the OISHII brand and celebrate the installation of their first physical machine, we headed over to the Flinders University Tav to take photos with a focus on showing the details of each panel and showing the machine in action.

We also created a fun 3D-rendered animation of the machine for engaging short-form social media videos
